Stories of Survival

One bizarre night a twenty-two year old man who was trying to establish himself and living on his own for the first time, answered the door of his apartment only to be confronted by two men who planned to rob him. Instead, one of the men shot him eight times.

After the shooting, three arrests were made.

One of the defendants was found guilty of second degree murder and will spend the rest of his life in prison. the second man was acquitted and the third is serving a fifteen year sentence for his part in the senseless killing.

Although there was relief following the three trials resolution, the pain that his family has endured is immeasurable. The sister’s Impact Statement revealed the love the family had for this young man, how the actions of the defendants shattered her family and destroyed a good life. “They took away my brother. They took away my brother’s dreams, and they took away his chance to be a father, which he always wanted.”

Families & Friends’ Victim Advocates supported the family in the courtroom during all three trials. As first generation residents, the family was completely unfamiliar with courtroom procedures. The Advocates were able to walk them through every step of the process.
